Veo Prompting Guide: From Idea to Production Prompt
A practical method for turning a rough AI video idea into a clear shot specification.
Start with one visible event
The clearest prompts usually center on one main action. Instead of describing an entire story arc in one prompt, decide what should happen during this shot: a person enters a room, a product rotates, a vehicle passes camera, or a character reacts.
Write the shot before the decoration
Choose framing and camera behavior early. “Wide establishing shot, slow dolly forward” gives the scene a visual grammar. Environment, lighting and style then support that grammar rather than competing with it.
Describe movement precisely
Separate subject movement from camera movement. “The cyclist rides toward the bridge while the camera tracks alongside at matching speed” is clearer than “dynamic cinematic movement.” Direction, speed and relationship to camera are useful.
Use lighting to explain the image
Lighting terms work best when they describe a visible result: soft window light from camera-left, sunrise rim light, diffused overcast daylight, or neon reflections on wet pavement. Avoid piling together lighting conditions that could not logically exist at once.
Treat audio as part of the shot
If the clip needs dialogue or ambience, write it separately. Specify the spoken line, environmental sound and important effects. If audio is not important, keep the prompt focused on the visual result.
Build a reusable template
[shot] + [subject] + [action] + [environment] + [camera movement] + [lighting] + [visual style] + [mood] + [audio] + [constraints]
Our free Veo Prompt Generator turns this framework into an interactive form.
For multi-scene stories
Do not rewrite permanent character traits in different ways for every shot. Store identity, wardrobe and world rules once, then reuse them. That is the purpose of AI Continuity Studio.
